Effective Treatments for Sensitive Teeth

Effective Treatments for Sensitive Teeth
Dr. Rita Feldmanis, your dentist in Eugene, knows that sensitive teeth can be a real pain. In fact, sensitive teeth affect millions of people worldwide, making everyday activities like eating, drinking and brushing teeth uncomfortable. But the good news is that there are effective treatments available to help manage – and even eliminate – tooth sensitivity.

Common Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

Before we discuss treatments, it’s important to understand the various underlying causes. Usually, it’s caused by worn tooth enamel or gum recession. When either of these occur, the dental nerves inside the center (or pulp) of the tooth are exposed. So when you eat or drink certain food or beverages (especially ones that are hot or cold), it stimulates the nerves, causing discomfort.
Other common causes of worn enamel and gum recession include tooth decay (aka cavities), cracked teeth, teeth grinding (or bruxism) and aggressive brushing.

Effective Treatments for Sensitive Teeth

Fortunately, there are a variety of remedies that Dr. Feldmanis can recommend to help alleviate your pain or discomfort, depending on the underlying cause. Here are some of our most effective options:
  • Desensitizing toothpaste. One of the easiest and most accessible treatments is using desensitizing toothpaste and/or mouthwash. These products contain compounds like potassium nitrate that help block pain signals from the tooth’s surface to the nerve. Regular use can significantly reduce sensitivity over time.
  • Dental sealants. These are thin coatings painted on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth (aka molars) to protect them from decay and reduce sensitivity. Sealants can fill in small gaps and grooves, providing a protective barrier against external stimuli. Dr. Feldmanis can provide this simple procedure in one visit, which generally only takes a few minutes to apply and can last several years before reapplication is needed.
  • Dental bonding. For more complex cases, Dr. Feldmanis might recommend dental bonding. This procedure involves applying a resin to cover the exposed root surfaces or any areas of the tooth that are causing sensitivity. Often completed in one visit, it can also significantly improve the appearance of a tooth. Bonding typically lasts three to five years (or sometimes longer) before needing repair.
  • Mouth guard. If teeth grinding is causing sensitivity, a custom-fitted mouth guard can be a game-changer. Worn at night, it can prevent grinding and protect your teeth from further damage.
  • Root canal. In cases where sensitivity is due to extensive tooth decay or damage, a root canal might be necessary. This procedure involves removing the damaged or infected pulp inside the tooth, cleaning the area and then sealing it.
  • Good oral hygiene. Last but certainly not least, maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial for preventing and managing tooth sensitivity. This includes brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush, flossing daily and visiting Dr. Feldmanis regularly for check-ups and cleanings.
