4 Tips for Summer Dental Health

Eugene dentist Dr. Rita Feldmanis knows the summer is a special time for many families: it’s a time for camping, sports, or just relaxing. Great dental health goes hand-in-hand with summer, and here’s a few quick tips to boost your summer smile.

#1 Avoid sugary drinks

These tempting treats abound during summer months, when we all want something cool and delicious to give us a break from the heat. Skip the lemonade, and head for unsweetened iced tea for a refreshing beverage that your teeth will thank you for.

#2 Stay hydrated

Excess heat can take its toll on our body’s water resources. Dry mouth, or a decreased saliva level, is one serious side effect of dehydration and it can have a big impact on your smile. Dry mouth makes your teeth more susceptible to cavities and your gums more vulnerable to bacterial attack. Drink plenty of fresh water throughout the day and more if you are active.

#3 Eat well

This one is easy– a Eugene summer comes jam-packed with delicious, fresh foods at all our local farmer’s markets. Take advantage of this season’s bounty to feed your body with local fruits and vegetables. A diet rich in fresh plant foods isn’t only good for your waistline, your heart, and your skin (among countless other body systems)– it keeps your teeth and gums healthy too. Eat up!

#4 Stay in touch

Finally, stay up-to-date on appointments to your Eugene dentist. If vacation will take you and your family out of town, be sure to call our office and schedule an appointment that works with your schedule– no matter what season it is, regular check ups are a critical part of dental health.

See you soon!
